The Hierarchical Organization of the Tatars from the Social System of the Golden Horde to the Russian Annexation

(55th Meeting, 2012)

As they are among the most famous Central-Asian peoples, the studies of the Altaic region cannot disregard the Tatars as a highly influential Turkic nation. Their organization, either military or administrative, constituted basis for inspiration for many neighbouring peoples or opponents with whom the Tatars interacted. In any form of organization, hierarchy plays a crucial part establishing the social order. Through exposure and comparison, the present study aims at rendering a general account of the hierarchical system of the Tatars, from the feudal order of the grazing pastures which ruled the noblemen of the Golden Horde to the Crimean Khanate and its remaining features in the Tatar world today.
