Alleged Case Stacking in Chuvash and Other Enigmata

(66th Annual Meeting of the PIAC Göttingen, 2024)

It has often been alleged that Chuvash is a strange language. A stranger within Turkic. Or typologically or otherwise weird. I will demonstrate that one of the more serious claims that Chuvash is atypical and aberrant is clearly unfounded.

Krueger‘s (1961:111) claim that Chuvash allows combining several case suffixes (into a new suffix?)‚when the meaning of both of them be needed in a phrase or sentence‘ is still reflected in recent publications. Not only can his analysis be shown to be wrong but there are also no other possible candidates to prove his point.

In addition, I will present several cases of misanalyses of the language on different levels.
