Surkharban Depicted: An Analytical Double View

An analysis of works of Buryat art depicting the subject of Surkharban — the traditional sports holidays — points to two types of chronological change. The first of these concerns the development in the games themselves with regard to their setting, rules and equipment. The second has to do with the different periods and styles of Buryat art. Sport and art both changed under the influence of changing social and political orders and can thus be seen as indicators of cultural metamorphosis.
