Scholarship in 19th Century Khiva and Neighboring Khanates

The paper will attempt to give an outline of scholarly life in 19th century Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand on the basis of indigenous sources and European travel reports. The learned hierarchy, the educational system and the topics studied by scholars will be presented and a comparison will be drawn with the Ottoman Empire.
