The Desht-i-Kypchak steppe in Medieval Sources

47th Meeting of the PIAC, Cambridge 2004

In previous publications the author looks through early stage of the history of the Kypchaks. In the period from the second part of the XII to the beginning of the XIII century, the Kypchaks started to fight against Horezm. The fact of establishing diplomatic relations between Alp-Kara Uran, leader of the Kypchaks, says that their opposition had been held with variable success. The sources containing information about settlement borders of the Kypchaks during this time are generally written in Arabic and old Russian. They are manuscripts and chronicles. In this report an attempt is made to share their qualification by their chronology and systematization of data about the settlement borders of the Kypchaks.
