Preface

The Thirtieth Meeting of the Permanent International Altaistic Conference was held under the presidency of Professor Gustav Bayerle on the Bloomington Campus of Indiana University, from June 19 to 25, 1987. Substantial financial support provided at very short notice by the National Endowment for the Humanities is gratefully acknowledged. Thanks are due also to the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center of Indiana University for its continuing support of the PIAC’s activities and, particularly, this Thirtieth Meeting.
There were 54 participants, representing 13 countries. The distribution of the participants according to their country was as follows: China (Peoples’ Republic) 4, Finland 1, France 1, Germany (Democratic Republic) 1, Germany (Federal Republic) 3, Holland 1, Hungary 4, Italy 1, Japan 2, Norway 3. Turkey 3, USA 25, USSR 5.
At the Business Meeting (June 23) Professor Denis Sinor was reelected Secretary General for a period of five years.
The Indiana Unversity Prize for Altaic Studies was awarded to Professor Pentti Aalto (Finland).
This volume contains the texts only of those papers presented at the meeting whose subjects fall within the general theme “Aspects of Altaic Civilization,” and whose manuscripts were prepared in a more-or-less usable form. A number of papers presented at the conference had not been received for publication. Efforts were made by the Editor to improve the English of some of the texts though, admittedly, many of them still do not conform to English usage. For technical reasons some of the transcriptions of foreign words were simplified. No attempt was made to unify either them or the presentation of the bibliographical references. The editor is most grateful to Miss April Younger for patiently and competently processing these difficult texts on an obsolete and temperamental word-processor.
