The Ceremonial Robe of Sungma Balung Cho Je

Joseph F. Rock photographed in 1923 the living oracle (Sungma) Balung Cho Je in full ceremonial garb at the Tibetan Yongning monastery. A detailed description of his silk garments, elaborate head gear and including the objects he is carrying and their meanings is the subject of this paper. The portrait is probably the first one ever done in full colour and such an excellent quality.
