Demonstrating A Methodology of Studying Turkish Texts

50th Annual Meeting of the PIAC, Kazan 2007

Information Technology has been employed fo examining real life situations using abstract objects and their relationships with each other to breakdown the real world into something that can be manipulated by technology. This paper tries to breakdown the study of old Turkish manuscripts into objects that can be modelled by technology. The paper concentrates on the production of grammatical indexes as a process whereby a physical document acts as an object in a methodology. This methodology is used to demonstrate how a reading of a Turkish manuscript can add to the understanding of the manuscript in several domains of knowledge. I will demonstrate, with examples, how knowledge in a related field of study can help clarify ambiguities in a manuscript. My talk will conclude by comparing the study of Turkology at different levels of abstraction, first by creating a grammatical index and secondly by examining how it is used to study of old Turkish texts.
