The Stirrup-iron in the Slavic Languages

(45th Meeting of the PIAC, Budapest 2002)

We know hardly anything about the languages of the once-existing alliance of Avar tribes. Scientists have not been successful in uncovering the secret of their linguistic records ever since. Making a research into Avar linguistic traces, we still have a source of treasure: the Slavic languages. The stirrup made of metal was brought to Europe by the Avars and the data, which I have collected so far, suggest that the Slavic words meaning “stirrup-iron” are partly of “Avar” origins.
