Relative Clauses in Siberian Turkic and Mongolic Languages

(45th Meeting of the PIAC, Budapest 2002)

In this paper some structural features of participial relative clauses will be discussed contrastively for several Southern Siberian Turkic (Altai-kizhi, Khakas, Tuvan) and Mongolic languages (Buryat, Khalkha), especially differences in the use of nominal possessive affixes as personal markers; the possibility for the relative clause subject to have the form of genitive case; the strategy of gapping of the relativized element and its limitations; the possibility of pronominal deixis to the head noun.
