67th Annual Meeting of the PIAC; Gotemba 2025
Drawing on general reflections on the history of weather magic in the Altaic world, this paper focuses on an Old Uyghur manuscript of considerable length (approximately 140 lines), discovered by the Japanese Turfan expeditions. The text comprises several sections on various practices for rain, snow and wind spells involving stones and similar objects. This unique manuscript contains several words that were previously unknown and are of considerable interest to the study of the history of Turkic languages.
