Cultural Relationship Between Lin Zexu And Altai Nationality in “The Zhu Zhi Poems of Going Back to Xinjiang”

35th Annual Meeting of the PIAC, 1992

Lin Zexu, the great well-known national hero in the recent history of China, was lowered his position and sent into exile to the west border region by Ch’ing Government just because he fought against England and burned the opium. This is the most unfortunate in his life. As an official, he lost the emperor’s trust and honours. As a husband, he got his dear wife into trouble and lived in Xinjiang being ill. As a father, he made his little son go with him to the border region. He suffered a lot. But he didn’t lose his belief. He didn’t take the fate lying down. He didn’t care for his life or honour either. He still devoted himself to his work in Xinjiang. He set up irrigation and cultivated the waste land. He experienced the scenery of Xinjiang and searched for a lot of sense materials about the traditional customs there. Then he wrote the famous poems “the Zhu Zhi Poems of Going Back to Xinjiang”. In the poems he vividly described every lunar time, the activities of religion, food and living, marriage and death, the medicine of architecture, culture and art, the wide scenery of the south of Xinjiang. Not only the contains of the poems are rich but also the words are easy to be understood. So everyone appreciates these poems. Through these descriptions you can know the true feelings of Lin Zexu to Altai nationality. We can also know the great character and moving spirit of Lin Zexu and his great contributions to Xinjiang.
