An Etymological Study of Cyprus Turkish Dialect (With a Point of View of Kazan Tatar Language and Divanü Lugat-it-Türk)

There are claims that 75% of the Turkish Cypriots are of Oghuz-Turkmen descendant. Whatever this ratio represents, the historical fact is that the vast majority of the Turkish Cypriots are linked to Anatolia and they are the descendants of Central Asian Oghuz-Turkmens by way of Anatolian Oghuz-Turkmens.

The Turkish spoken in Cyprus is accepted as a dialect (ağız) of Turkey’s Turkish. In this context Cyprus Turkish dialect takes place with in the Altai subgroup of the Ural-Altai languages group.

Cyprus Turkish is originated from the Ottoman (Anatolian) Turkish which is in the era of New Turkish.

There are a lot of studies and scientific works regarding to the Turkish Cypriot dialect. But its first etymological dictionary in book formation (Kıbrıs Türkçesinin Etimolojik Sozlüğü — 2007) was published only this year. Prepared and published by Osman Kabataş this dictionary contains many words relating to different languages and especially with the Altai subgroup of the Ural-Altai languages group.

There are 40 words which begin with the letters “a” and “b” relating to the words takes place in Divanü Lûgat-it-Türk. Of course in whole dictionary there are words relating to the words which takes place in Divanü Lûgat-it-Türk are in hundreds.

There are five words which begin with the letters “a” and “b” which again are related to Kazan Tatar Language. Of course there are more words that are related to Kazan Tatar Language in the whole dictionary.

We will study the etymological dictionary of Cyprus Turkish dialect (Kıbrıs Türkçesinin Etimolojik Sozlüğü — 2007) in our presentation. We will also give detailed information about all the words related to Divanü Lûgat-it-Türk and Kazan Tatar Language.
