On Some Feminine Relationship Terms in the Teleut Dialect

(45th Meeting of the PIAC, Budapest 2002)

It is well known that the Turkic dialects have an extensive vocabulary about relationship names. There are different terms for the relationship names of close relativities, even of distant relativities. Most of these relationship names have different meanings, and nuances for relativities. In this paper I would like to mention about some feminine names expressing relationship in the Teleut dialect. Teleut is an Altai dialect, which is spoken in Kemerovo and Gorno-Altaisk region in South Siberia. Nearly twenty relationship terms will be considered in this paper. The terms will compare with the historical and contemporary Turkic languages and dialects by the points of etymology, phonetic, morphology, and semantics.
